UPGRADE YOUR ACADEMIC SKILLS!

College can be a challenge. Knowing where to go for a little extra help when you need it can mean the difference between feeling overwhelmed and succeeding academically. You have already paid the differential tuition that makes additional student services available. Check out these “key” resources geared to help you succeed!

Center for Academic Resources (CAR), Dempsey Hall 317 ~ Whether you want to earn an “A,” or just need to pass a tough class, CAR can help connect you with FREE tutoring. In some cases, the tutoring will be sponsored by specific academic departments; in other cases, CAR will work with you to help you find an individual tutor for a challenging class when no departmental tutoring is available. The Math Lab, Swart Hall 327 (Math 100 and 103 only) and Swart Hall 113 ~ Bring your math assignments and math questions to the Math lab. The Math Lab offers FREE “student-to-student” tutoring sessions. Visit the Math Lab for more information.

The Reading Study Center (RSC) can help you develop skills related to time management, active learning strategies, note-taking, textbook reading, test preparation, and test-taking. Gain these skills through one-time workshops or take a class for credit! Visit the RSC website to learn more!

The Writing Center, Radford Hall offers both walk-in services and scheduled appointments. FREE student-to-student tutoring to help you take written assignments from brainstorming to first drafts to edited, final documents is available. Writing Center tutors are in high demand! Book an appointment early! Check out their website for further information.

There are other resources that are free and available to you. Ask for assistance early rather than waiting until it is too late to change the outcome!

  • Study over 30 hours per week outside of class
  • Stay 1-2 chapters ahead in their text
  • Review materials prior to class
  • Review notes after class
  • Visit advisors, professors/instructors, and tutors for help
  • Study in small groups (3-5) several times per week

GROUP ADVISING SESSION

Students! Be aware that there are mandatory group advising sessions for many colleges and majors. Group advising provides information about program requirements for admission, general education, majors, minors and graduation. Look for this information in your UW Oshkosh email account, in class announcements, or department websites.

FIRST YEAR STUDENTS ONLY

First Year Students: Watch your UW Oshkosh e-mail account for important information regarding the MAP-Works program for UW Oshkosh freshmen.

PART 1: Complete the MAP-Works survey online between Sept. 17 and Sept. 30. This survey covers factors related to college success. Your results will include information about your strengths and weaknesses as a new college student and will provide specific recommendations for how to make the most of your first year at UW Oshkosh.

PART 2: Call 424-3299 ( SSS students call 424-1310) to schedule an appointment with your academic advisor between Sept. 22 and Oct. 31. During this appointment you will review your MAP-Works results and get additional information about how you can avoid common pitfalls for first year students.

Students who participate in both parts of the MAP-Works program will receive a free gift from their advisor and will also qualify for prizes and incentives to be awarded during the course of the fall semester.

LINK UP WITH A MAJOR
...exploration leads to great discoveries of how your interests, skills, and values are important to making an effective career or major decision.

Are you undecided about your major? Maybe you know your major but have no idea what you can do with it. Or maybe you declared a major, but you’re just not sure if that’s what you want to do.

Whatever your situation, uncertainty about majors and careers is common! The advisors in the UARC can help. Make an individual appointment, and we’ll talk about your interests and skills, introduce you to options, and help you learn how to explore and decide on a major. There are many resources at UWO to assist you with making a major decision – here are just a few to start with:

CAREER FAIR ON THE FOX

Career Fair on the Fox ~takes place on Thursday, October 2, 2008 from 2:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. in the Kolf Sports Center. An opportunity to connect with employers in the entire Fox Valley and Oshkosh area for full-time positions, internships, co-ops, and practicum positions. A great way for undeclared students to explore potential careers too! For more information, visit Career Services or meet with a career advisor in Dempsey 230.

SEE THE WORLD! STUDY ABROAD...

Visit the Office of International Education (OIE) in Dempsey 146 (424-0775) to find out more about programs that can allow you to study abroad or in other parts of the U.S.!

The OIE is responsible for coordinating all study abroad programs offered through UW Oshkosh and has a wealth of information on other UW System programs as well as programs from a variety of schools across the country. Highlights include:

  • Individual and group study abroad advising (Student/Family Orientations)
  • Choice of participating in faculty-led group programs or student exchange programs
  • Financial aid and scholarship information

STUDY ABROAD IN THE UNITED STATES

National Student Exchange (NSE): This program allows students to experience academics and student life at numerous colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and its territories as well as Canada. Highlights of the program include:

  • Over 170 participating colleges and universities to choose from
  • A full year exchange or one semester~ as early as your sophomore year
  • Payment of tuition and fees at UW Oshkosh rates
  • Eligible students may receive financial aid
  • Web resources giving information on the program and the participating institutions http://www.nse.org/.
