I am highly involved in my education outside of the classroom. I spent the summer of 2003 living and doing research on Alzheimer's Disease in Bowling Green, Ohio. This opportunity allowed me a great amount of knowledge and growth that I might not have been able to obtain otherwise. During my months in Ohio, I was able to be involved in every step of the research process-from behavioral tests to surgeries to brain tissue analyses. Because of this research, I now have a much greater appreciation of the mechanisms of Alzheimer's Disease. It makes me proud that my research may have an impact on the many families whose lives have been forever changed by this disease.
My goal is to become a Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist. In order to help me in the realization of this goal, I volunteer in the Emergency Room of Mercy Medical Center and job shadow an area physician. Dr. Karen Gremminger, Hematologist/Oncologist in the Fox Valley area, has afforded me the opportunity to shadow her during her rounds in 4 area hospitals. The hours I have spent with Dr. Gremminger have opened my eyes to the wonders of medicine, the truths and mysteries behind diseases, and the great need I have within me to help others.
These life lessons aid me in my studies and help me to remain focused on my future. In addition to the availability of on-campus research involvement, our faculty members are very willing to assist students in finding opportunities like those I have explored. This willingness to provide direction is simply one of the characteristics which sets our faculty and staff here at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh apart from the rest.
